How does Artificial Intelligence impact the Fine Art world & Creative workers?

ChatGPT will fundamentally change how writing is taught, but how will it impact the world of journalism or more creative fields and the value of workers in those fields?

ChatGPT is just one example of how artificial intelligence is directly impacting the career paths of creatives. Artificial intelligence is not new to the art world, instead it has been adapted. Image programing to commercial galleries are celebrating and integrating this technology. What is interesting is when you break down the true interaction of artificial intelligence and the source is that there is a collaboration taking place. AI integration in the fine art field has been prevalent since the early nineties. The main difference is the use of image generated AI has had a stronger influence since 2020.

How does AI truly change the perception of art? I want you to think of this change as a simple shift, similar to the ones of see in biological settings. The beauty of art often described in the public sphere is the rawness of human emotion that is able to reach the masses. The hybrid interaction of machine generated content and human impact is blurring just like out realities.

The concept of originality is a main concern that occurs when thinking about the process of artistic expression- if computers are taking over, then what exactly defines an artist, specifically an financially successful artist? Now AI allows for the creative ranges of machines to be tested. AI’s integration into the artist studio can take form from taking over painting tasks and completion under time lines.

The fear of AI exists in the surface level understanding of fine art and that is the human to human experience. Artists not solely producing their own work is nothing new, think about American artist, Jeff Koons who has admitted that he does not create any of his work alone and instead has a team of 100 studio assistants in New York City. The final component of his work is completely outsourced, yet he is the idea origin. Koon’s practice has solicited opinions on the originality of his work and has often been coined the product of an artist in a capitalized culture.

The idea for what I will call the Koons Collective or in other words his art factory is directly influenced by Andy Warhol’s factory. For Koons, computers have always been an important part of his design process. He creates digital models for his sculptures that are then handed over to his team for execution.

Now I wanted to touch on the isolated function of ChatGPT. Outside of the realm of art history, what does ChatGPT mean for writing? Currently the knowledge of the technology stops at 2021, which means that someone has to be feeding the new round of information. The encompassing information of ChatGPT is trained from 600 GB of information. This amount results in a static writing style that is generic at best. The field of creative writing holds its title of creativity. As the standard for writing changes the standard for high level literature will change in the same capacity.

The future of artificial technology can be scary, and daunting, but can it be a window of change? How can we reimagine our impact on our world by integrating this technology into our daily practices? Will the art market become more saturated from some artist producing AI generated work? Maybe. Will writing standards become more analytical? Probably - This is just another pivot that will create a historical impact on the way artist and writers practice.

How do you feel about the impact of AI? How do you feel about the impact of machines on the production of fine art?

XOXO
